The Fall 2011 session of Youth Art Team was all about transition and preparation. So full that the blog got left in the dust! It's making a comeback...
On Night #1, the team welcomed new members and ran down the team's one-year history. Part of that history included the Youth Art Team's finances that got its start with an initial investment in the students and the Youth Art Team idea. That initial investment, the team's notecard fundraising project, and a contribution from students who attended VBS at Orchard Hill Church in the summer of 2011 set the team up well for their next big project. But what will that new project be?
Before venturing into a lively brainstorming session, the team decided to share some of their money in the amount of $85 with another group of students in Des Moines who are doing good work. Freedom for Youth Ministries hosted the Youth Art Team during their Des Moines Field Trip. Seven Freedom for Youth students gave up a Saturday in September to show the Youth Art Team around their campus. Youth Art Team students left quite impressed with their woodworking, welding, and pottery projects, so they decided this was exactly where their money would go.
Next, we handed over some of the decisions over to the students, and they enjoyed their first chance to brainstorm and vote on their next big project. Grownups scribbled their ideas as quickly as they could... here are some of their lists:
Then after a few energetic rounds of voting, students narrowed the list to their top two ideas – a sculpture vs. a play.
The final vote was 5 to 6 in favor of...
With that decision made, students learned that a local company offered them a challenge: Raise $500 by the end of 2011 and they will match every dollar raised up to $500. The team will earn this money for two reasons: 1) so they can give away more money to others, and 2) to fund future Youth Art Team projects. Watch the challenge announcement for yourself:
